The Pueo or short-eared owl inhabits forests and grasslands throughout the Hawaiian Islands. It is endemic to Hawai'i and revered as a guardian spirit or 'amakua in Hawaiian culture. The red lehua flower is the official flower of the Hawai'i Island and comes from the Ohia tree, which is also endemic. The Hapu'u tree fern is an endemic Hawaiian tree fern and is found on all the major Hawaiian Islands. The palapalai ferns are found growing in the more shady and wet areas of the Hawai'i Island. They were used by the ancient Hawaiians to decorate hula alters to Laka, the hula goddess.
